‘Orh’ refers to ‘yam’ in Hokkien, and is coincidentally the sound that people make when they come to a realisation. ‘Hanzi’ means ‘sweet potato’, and this phrase came about because these are two similar food items found in local dishes, and ‘hanzi’ becomes the retort to someone saying ‘orh’, given an obvious situation. For the puzzled Singaporean.
