Siglap | 實乞納
Made an impromptu trip down to Siglap one morning recently. Siglap was noted in maps as early as 1846 where it was known for its fishing villages and coconut plantations. The area eventually grew into a suburban residential district.
I rode around Siglap to visit some of the row houses around Frankel Avenue and Figaro Street. Located along Figaro Street is Lian Beng Huat, an old provision shop which opened around the 1970s.
Riding down East Coast Road, one can also spot the Siglap Post Office, built in 1965, with its iconic ventilation blocks. Not too far towards the west, there is a cluster of now uninhabited flats which were built in 1963 by the Housing and Development Board (HDB).
