Sturdee Road
Sturdee Road branches out from Serangoon Road into Kerrisdale Condo, which is the site of the former Jalan Besar Estate, a cluster of SIT public housing. It connects Serangoon Road with Petain Road and Jalan Besar Road on the other side. Like some of the neighbouring roads around here, Sturdee Road is named after a well-known World War I figure : Admiral of the Fleet, Sir Frederick Charles Doveton Sturdee.
At the junction of Sturdee Road (currently Sturdee Road North) and Serangoon Road are two distinct structures, part of a series of similar looking shophouses that could be found along Serangoon Road.
Looking through the photos taken in the 1970s - 1980s, there are many automobile related services along this road. These shophouses used to house such businesses : Inwah Pte Ltd and Lumly Motors. Both are established in the mid-1970s and still operating.
My recent memory of 544 Serangoon Road is "The French Stall" opened by Xavier Le Henaff in 2000. I remember it being famous for making French cuisine more accessible, before Saveur and Black Sheep Cafe. The restaurant was closed in 2016 after 16 years in operation, and was briefly reopened as "Breton" before being replaced by an Italian bistrot today.
