The street has a range of shophouses with different styles and from different periods, including a row of shophouses with “rococo windows”.
The illustration features the former Sin Keow Coffeeshop, located on the site of New World Centre at the junction ofJalan Besar and Syed Alwi Road. The shophouse and coffeeshop was probably demolished sometime around the late 1980s.
While the shophouse and the coffeeshop is no longer around, you can still find some ornate shophouses of similar architecture and ornamentation around the Jalan Besar, which served as references for this drawing, along with some photographs from the National Archives.
