Wessex Estate & Colbar Print
Details
Wessex Estate
Located near the former Ayer Rajah Camp, around Portsdown Road area, the Wessex Estate is a cluster of apartments and semi-detached houses built in the 1930s and 1940s to serve the military personnel working at the military installations at Alexandra and Pasir Panjang. One of the key landmarks we associate with the estate today is Colbar, which was originally located at Jalan Hang Jebat and was a popular canteen for the soldiers, dating back to 1953. The structure and coffeeshop was eventually dismantled and put together again at Wessex Estate in 2003, after lobbying by the residents, and saving it from demolition due to the construction of a highway.
I first visited ColBar with my tutor, Dr. Lai Chee Kien, during my university days and it reminded me of the Neo Tiew coffeeshop in some ways.
